Saimoe Champion Statistics 2012

Which characteristics lead to saimoe success? It's time to update the statistics with 2011's results.

The champion hair color spectrum:
Hair styles: Neck length: 2 Moderately long: 1 Long: 2 Hime cut: 1 Twintails: 3 Drill Pigtails: 1
Long hair wins 7-3, and twintails are the most popular style.

Height: (5'2 is average for Japanese females)
Short: 6 Shorter average: 2 Average: 2 Taller average: 0 Tall: 0
Kagami (at 5'2) and Mami (in the 5'1-5'3 range) are the only winners who are not shorter than the average Japanese woman. Many winners are very young and have not finished growing, such as Nanoha (who is counted in her original little girl form), but it is commonplace for winners to be canonically recognized as shorter than their peers, like Taiga and Azusa.

Tsundere:
The first four winners were not tsundere, the fifth was, the sixth was not, the following three were (using a broad definition of tsundere), and Mami was not. Non-tsunderes win 6-4, but the recent trend has been in favor of tsunderes, aside from Mami, who was an exception in many ways.

Voice actress popularity:
Number of significant roles played: 0-10: 0 actresses 10-20: 1 actress Over 20: 9 actresses
Saimoe characters voiced: 7, 1, 3, 27, 11, 27, 8, 35, 4, 19 for an average of 14.2.
Every winner except Riku Harada (Sara Nakayama) had a prolific VA with multiple characters in saimoe. Yukari Tamura was the only VA to win twice.

Number of saimoe entrants from the same show:
7, 3, 4, 25, 12, 7, 19, 7, 10, 6 for an average of 10.
Winners generally come from shows that field many competitors.

Studios:
Madhouse, Xebec, Toei/AIC, Seven Arcs, Nomad, Studio DEEN, Kyoto Animation x2, JC Staff, SHAFT. Kyoto Animation was the only studio to win twice.

Age:
10-11, 14, 13, 9, not human with the appearance of a loli, 10-12, 17, 17, 15-16, 15. Average: 13.5.
Older characters have become more popular in recent years. The first 6 tournaments were won by a combination of elementary and middle school students, and an artificial doll. However, the last four tournaments were won by high school students and a middle school third year who was the oldest of her main cast. Contrary to popular belief, saimoe voters aren't a bunch of pedophiles anymore. However, all winners have been under 18. Girls who look like lolis but are actually legal in Japan are in fashion.

Glasses:
No meganekko has ever won saimoe.

Zettai ryouiki:
Yes: 3 No: 7 Surprisingly, only three winners sported zettai ryouiki in their usual outfits. Standard school uniforms with socks performed well. Every winner usually wears skirts or dresses.

Breasts:
Every singe winner has a small chest except Mami. DFC was pretty much a strict requirement until last year. Nothing is sacred now.

Main character status:
MC: 2 Love interest: 2 Not MC: 6 Minor: 0
Most winners were major side characters. No minor characters won. Both of the main character winners were magical girls.

Show demographic:
Shoujo: 3 Shonen: 2.5 Seinen: 4.5
The first three winners came from shoujo shows, but the last 7 came from shows aimed at men. Josei shows have been particularly unpopular in saimoe.

Number of episodes the show ran for:
70+, 26, 50, 25, 24, 26, 24, 25, 39, 12.
Most winners came from two cours shows. K-ON ran for three cours, and Cardcaptor Sakura and Ashita no Nadja were long running. These counts may not include OVA's, bonus episodes, movies, and so on. The only single cours show to produce a winner was Madoka.

In summary, the ideal saimoe competitor comes from a two cours show aimed at males with many moe characters, has a popular VA, wears a school uniform, is a short teenager, has long hair in twintails, doesn't wear glasses, and is flat-chested. In other words, science has objectively proven MOETRON to be the ideal moe character.
Mami broke the bust barrier last year, but rather than graft one tenth of a gigantic breast onto poor Moetron, we can explain it away with Mami's magical girl status: magical girls have been quite popular and responsible for other outliers, such as both main character winners and the two youngest non-doll champions. 2011's lesson is that it's time for Moetron to make a contract.
